Happy Holiday RV Resort, Rapid City SD
July 14 - July 25
We had originally planned to spend two weeks at the FamCamp on Ellsworth AFB, but found this campground that was a better choice for seeing the sights without as much back and forth.
This is an interesting park, we are wall to wall in our space. Our tow is parked beside us in the grass, ok'd by owners. There is a covered picnic shelter with two tables in between us and another site. Kind of unusual for us but not a problem either. Not all spaces have the covered picnic area. The trip to our site was very tight, the tree limbs rubbed the top of the coach and we went very slow because of the tightness. Not our favorite park but we've been at worse. We did use the laundry facilities so it wouldn't heat up our coach. There is a pool but we didn't use it. We had several extremely hot days (107F) and the breakers for our section tripped several times. The park is scheduled to have the electrical distribution on this row repaired by an electrician. We turned as much off inside the coach as we could but...
We've stayed busy seeing the sights, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Custer, Hill City, Keystone. Although Mount Rushmore was inspiring and Greg was honored along with other veterans in the crowd, we have loved every visit to Custer State Park. We did several scenic drives (Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Wildlife loop) with unbelievable views, lots of twists, turns, one car at a time tunnels. We did another sunset drive on the Wildlife Loop. We saw a few animals, prairie dogs, burros up on a hill, several pronghorn and a mountain goat. But, the big thrill was seeing the herd of buffalo. If you've ever seen a picture of Custer State Park with the bison all over the road, that's what we came upon. It was close to sunset and there were bison everywhere in the fields and on the road. Not sure we could guesstimate how many there were. We were able to spend some time just watching them graze in the twilight. An awesome sight to be sure. As we left the Park, we saw several cars pulled over to the side of the road, which usually means someone has seen something and this time that was true. There was a herd of elk up in the trees just slowly moving along. It was almost dark and hard to see but they were there. We had the windows down and heard the notorious elk call, awesome.
We are Looking forward to completing our SD visit with a stay at the FamCamp on Ellsworth AFB.
